The Department of Transport provides motor vehicle inspection and registration, and driver licensing services throughout the Territory. It also provides Motorcyclist Education Training And Licensing (METAL) training in Darwin and Alice Springs.
MVR activities are directed primarily at the safety of vehicles and their occupants. There is also a team of on-road transport inspectors who inspect vehicles for roadworthiness and monitor heavy vehicles.
