Smith and Bennett Street Walkways

About the project

The Territory Government in collaboration with the City of Darwin is delivering two new covered walkways at the Smith and Bennet Streets intersection, adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre.

A contract has recently been awarded local contractor, GT Builders, to design and construct the new structures that will improve pedestrian connectivity and provide an iconic landmark for cruise ship tourism and visitors to the CBD.

The shelters will feature laser cut aluminium screens, stringy-bark timber lining, new paving, and at night will be illuminated with LED theme lighting.

Design development is now well advanced with construction set to begin mid-April and due for completion September 2019.  Works are programmed around cruise ship activity and daily activity in the area to reduce impact to pedestrians and traffic.

This infrastructure project complements other greening and shading initiatives being delivered across the CBD, including the Cavenagh Street Heat Mitigation Trial works, the State Square Underground Carpark and the greening and shading elements being delivered by City of Darwin as part of their Cavenagh and Bennett Street project.
