Queen’s Baton Relay Road closures and bus services cancellations

The Queen’s Baton Relay is coming to Alice Springs, Litchfield, Palmerston, Casuarina and Darwin from the 28 February – 2 March.

During this time significant road closures will be in place to accommodate the relay event. Roads will be closed progressively following the Queen’s Baton Relay route.

Traffic management will be in place to ensure safe passage of the Baton and help residents and businesses plan for minimal disruption.

Public bus routes will be impacted and some services will be cancelled.

Taxi and minibus ranks will be progressively closed as the baton convoy travels along the relay route.

Alice Springs

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Alice Springs on Wednesday 28 February at 11.40 am - 5.30 pm and Thursday 1 March at 8.46 am to 10.07 am.

The following NTG roads will be impacted:

Wednesday 28 March:

  • Between 11.40 am and 12.20 pm the Baton will travel from Braitling Primary School to St Phillips College via the North Stuart Highway. Traffic management will be in place between Woods Terrace and Schwarz Crescent. Delays of up to 15 minutes may occur as the Relay travels southbound on this section of the North Stuart Highway.
  • Between 1.25 pm and 1.35 pm the Baton will travel from OLSH Sadadeen Campus to the Royal Flying Doctors Service via Sadadeen Road and Stott Terrace. Traffic management will be in place and short delays are expected.
  • Between 4.55 pm and 5.30 pm the Baton will travel from Anzac Hill to Todd Mall via the Stuart Highway, the Alice Springs CBD including Stott Terrace. Traffic management will be in place and short delays are expected.

Thursday 1 March

  • Between 8.30 am and 9.05 am the Baton will travel from Larapinta Primary School to Araluen Christian College via Larapinta Drive. Traffic Management will be in place between Albrecht Drive and Blain Street and a short delay is expected.
  • Between 9.50 am and 10.20 am the Baton will travel from Gillen Primary School to OLSH Treager School via the Telegraph Terrace (Stuart Highway). Traffic management will be in place from Espie Street to Treager Avenue and a short delay is expected.

ASBus impacts on Wednesday 28 February include:

  • Route 500 service departing the Alice Springs Interchange at 5.10 pm will not operate.
  • Passengers wishing to go to Bloomfield St are advised to catch the Route 400 service departing the Interchange at 5.30 pm. This service may also be delayed due to the road closures.
  • Route 100, 200, 300 & 400 services that depart the Alice Springs Interchange at 4.45 pm and 5.30 pm may also experience delays during this time.

Litchfield (Bees Creek)

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Litchfield (Bees Creek) on Thursday 1 March at 4:55 pm – 5.30 pm.

The following roads will be progressively closed following the relay route:

  • Inbound on Stuart Highway, near Sayer Road to Bees Creek Road  will be closed for 1 hour and 30 minutes, detours will be in place.
  • Inbound and outbound on Bees Creek Road, from Stuart Highway to Fred’s Pass Sport and Recreation Reserve.

Bus impacts include:

  • Route 28 from Darwin Interchange at 4:30 pm, Route 445 from Palmerston Interchange at 4:50 pm and Route 5 from Darwin Interchange at 6:05 pm may experience delays

Viewing of the Queen’s Baton Relay at Litchfield (Bees Creek) will be provided at Freds Pass and parking will be provided at the Sattler Airstrip. Special event buses will also be available, for more information please go to the Northern Territory Government website.

Palmerston

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Palmerston on Friday 2 March at 8.50 am – 10.50 am.

Temple Terrace inbound from Essington Terrace to Chung Wah Terrace will be closed for 20 minutes during this time.

The following roads will be progressively closed inbound and outbound following the relay route:

  • Woodroffe Avenue, from Woodroffe Primary to Sibbald Crescent.
  • Sibbald Crescent, from Woodroffe Avenue to Emery Avenue.
  • Emery Avenue, from Sibbald Crescent to Victoria Drive.
  • Victoria Drive, from Emery Avenue to Essington Avenue.
  • Essington Avenue, from Victoria Drive to Temple Terrace.
  • Temple Terrace, from Essington Avenue to Chung Wah Terrace.
  • Chung Wah Terrace, from Temple Terrace to the Palmerston Boulevard.
  • The Palmerston Boulevard, from Chung Wah Terrace to the Palmerston Recreation Centre.

Bus impacts include:

  • Route 71 at 8.35 am, 9.02 am, 9.45 am and 10.08 am departure will be cancelled.
  • Route 70 at 10.08 am departure may experience delays.
  • Route 72 at 10.51 am departure and Route 73 at 10.52 am departure will have a slight change in route and will not pickup from the Coles bus stop on Chung Wah Terrace.

Casuarina

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Casuarina on Friday 2 March at 11:55 am – 1:30 pm.

Trower Road outbound from Parer Drive to Henbury Avenue will be closed for 25 minutes during this time. Trower Road inbound right turns will be restricted.

The following roads will be progressively closed inbound and outbound following the relay route:

  • Union Terrace, from Matthews Road to Lee Point Road.
  • Lee Point Road, from Union Terrace to Moil Crescent.
  • Budgen Street, from Lee Point Road to Lanyon Terrace.
    • Lanyon Terrace, from Budgen Street to Moil Crescent.
  • Moil Crescent, from Lanyon Terrace to Parer Drive.
  • Henbury Avenue, from Trower Road to Gsell Street.

Bus impacts include:

  • Route 3
    • 11:30 am departure, will detour via Yanula Drive, continue along Yanula Drive turning left on to Union Terrace, continue along the normal route of travel to the interchange. Four stops will be missed due to this detour.
    • 12:30 am departure, will be cancelled.
  • Route 2 at 12:26 pm departure will be cancelled.
  • Route 10 from Darwin Interchange at 12.35 pm will detour via Trower Road, left onto Lakeside Drive, right onto Dripstone Road, left onto Bradshaw Terrace, right into Casuarina Interchange.  Four bus stops on Trower Road will be missed due to this detour. The 1 pm departure from Casuarina Interchange may be delayed.
  • Route 11, Route 9 and Route 1h at 1.15 pm departure may experience delays.

Darwin/the Waterfront

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Darwin/the Waterfront on Friday 2 March at 3:15 pm – 4.30 pm.

The following roads will be progressively closed inbound and outbound following the relay route:

  • The Esplanade, from Herbert Street to Daly Street.
  • Daly Street, from the Esplanade to Mitchell Street.
  • Mitchell Street, from Daly Street to Knuckey Street.
  • Knuckey Street, from Mitchell Street to the Mall.
  • Bennett Street, from the Mall to Herbert Street.
  • Herbert Street, from Mitchell Street to the Esplanade.
  • The Esplanade, from Mitchell Street to Hughes Avenue.
  • Hughes Avenue, from the Esplanade to Kitchener Drive.
  • Kitchener Drive, from Hughes Avenue to Stokes Hill Road.
  • Stokes Hill Road, from Kitchener Drive to the Convention Centre.

Bus impacts include:

  • All inbound buses will be diverted to Cavenagh Street from 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm
  • Route 14c at 3.55 pm departure will be cancelled.
