Alice Springs flood mitigation

The Northern Territory Government is delivering the Alice Springs flood mitigation project which will reduce flooding impacts in the Alice Springs region.

In June 2017, the Alice Springs Regional Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee released a report that provides recommendations and measures for managing and reducing the flood risk in the Alice Springs region. Read the Final Alice Springs Flood Mitigation Report (2017) PDF (7.5 MB).

A contract to survey floor levels for habitable buildings across Alice Springs with the Q100 flood zone has been awarded to Fyfe Pty Ltd.

The purpose of the survey is to understand flooding depths at individual property levels - before and after proposed mitigation measures for impacted properties.

Floor surveys will be undertaken in the:

  • Alice Springs CBD
  • East Side
  • Stuart
  • Braitling
  • Gillen
  • the Gap
  • Arumbera
  • Connellan
  • Desert Springs
  • Ilparpa
  • Ross.

The data from the survey will help develop the most effective flood mitigation strategies for Alice Springs. It will be available for public comment once flood modelling has been completed.

The following are the estimated project timeline:

  • floor level surveying – mid-2020
  • flood mitigation concept design – late-2020
  • community consultation on preferred concepts – late-2020
