National Remote and Regional Transport Strategy

The National Remote and Regional Transport Strategy was endorsed by the Transport and Infrastructure Council on 6 November 2015.

The strategy’s core aims are to maximise investment opportunities in transport infrastructure and services, minimise regulatory burden, improve coordination across borders and governments, and influence policy development relevant to remote and regional transport.

It outlines eleven key actions in three strategic areas of focus, being:

  • transport infrastructure
  • transport services
  • transport regulation.

The strategy was developed based on the outcomes of a transport industry and services forum (the Alice Springs Forum) that was held in May 2014.

The Alice Springs Forum was attended by 120 government, community and industry stakeholders from across Australia. These stakeholders came from sectors that included logistics, trucking, freight, road transport, livestock and primary producers, local government, mining and minerals, rail, aviation and tourism.

The Alice Springs Forum confirmed that the remote and regional areas of Australia drive economic growth in Australia as a whole, and require targeted approaches to transport infrastructure investment, service delivery and regulation to improve productivity and enhance economic growth.

Further targeted engagement with transport industry organisations across Australia was undertaken as part of the strategy’s development during late 2014 and early 2015.

A draft strategy was then released for public consultation in May 2015.
